KOTA KINABALU: A market trader was killed while two others were injured after they were flung out of their van after being hit by a 25-year-old Puspakom official near Inanam near here early Sunday.
The 41-year-old victim was believed to be killed on the spot from chest and head injuries while his nine-year-old nephew escaped with minor injuries.
His friend, a 55-year-old trader who was in the passengers’ seat, was seriously hurt after sustaining multiple broken bones in the 4.12am accident.
Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said the trio were heading towards Tuaran market not far from here to sell their goods when they were suddenly hit from behind.
He said the suspect was believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol, adding that he had lost control of his car and rammed into the rear of the van.
“The impact caused the three to be flung out of the vehicle after it veered off to the left side of the lane before smashing into a tree,” ACP Chandra said.
The suspect escaped with minor injuries.
The case is being investigated for driving under the influence of alcohol under the Road Transport Act 1987.
