LAS VEGAS, Oct 10 — Is “Star Wars Battlefront II” already out? Not until November 17, but its subtly different, colon-carrying 2005 predecessor “Star Wars: Battlefront II” had its multiplayer restored last week, resulting in the game’s sudden resurgence.
Restoring native, no-fuss multiplayer to the iconic “Star Wars: Battlefront II” as its modern-day equivalent entered a public beta testing phase was a neat way to show off GOG Galaxy’s cross-network multiplayer feature and raise awareness of the new game among fans of the old.
Enthusiasm for “Star Wars: Battlefront II” in its classic form — plus timed discounts on both GOG and GamersGate (which sells Steam-redeemable game codes) — saw the title rise up those stores’ respective charts.
The new multiplayer itself hasn’t been smooth sailing, its technical update removing a previously established workaround, and connectivity issues making online play difficult, though the existing “SW:BF2” community is interested in working with GOG to improve the situation.
Elsewhere, with its visual style very much pulled straight from 1930s animated cartoons like “Betty Boop,” “Popeye” and early “Mickey Mouse,” sidescrolling action adventure “Cuphead” climbed two positions on Steam going into its second week of general availability, maintaining a second place rank on GOG, and reaching top spot on the Humble Store.
Perhaps not quite as retro is “A Hat in Time,” which merely harks back to the late 90s and early 2000s, referencing treasured 3D platformers such as “Super Mario 64,” “Banjo-Kazooie,” and “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.”
Some of the team behind “Banjo-Kazooie” released their own spiritual successor earlier this year, “Yooka-Laylee,” but so far “A Hat in Time” is the better-received release — at a fraction of the crowdfunded budget, no less — with an Overwhelmingly Positive review rating from its PC players on Steam.
