KLANG: Blogger and Umno member Zaharin Mohd Yassin has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here for making an offensive statement against a Puteri Umno leader last year.
The 65-year-old, whose real name is Abd Zarin Mohd Yasin, was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) for allegedly having used an Internet application to voluntary make the offensive statement.
According to the charge sheet, Abd Zarin had posted the offensive statement on his Facebook page named ‘Zaharin Mohd Yasin’ on Oct 8, 2016 at 8.49pm, which was subsequently read at 9pm at No. 34, Jalan SP16, Taman Sri Putra in Sungai Buloh, Selangor.
Wearing a short-sleeved white shirt and black pants, Abd Zarin was calm when a court interpreter read him the charge.
His counsel Muhammad Fitri Abdullah Wahid asked for a lower bail as his client was unemployed and only earned commissions through his blog.
Judge Tasnim Abu Bakar later fixed Nov 16 for case management and remention.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Sophian Zakaria prosecuted.
The charge under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act, carries a maximum RM50,000 fine or up to one year’s jail, or both, upon conviction.
