KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 — The federal government must address a media report claiming that the cost of the East Coast Rail Line (ERCL) may increase further to RM80 billion, said Damansara Utama assemblyman Yeo Bee Yin.

Yeo said the ERCL was estimated last year to cost RM55 billion, which was already an increase from the RM30 billion when the project was first announced.

“We would like to seek clarification from Putrajaya as to how much exactly will ECRL cost the Malaysian people?

“While we welcome rail infrastructure project in the east coast, we are perplexed at the high price tag,” she said in a statement.

The Edge Malaysia reported this week that the ERCL cost was set to rise due to the inclusion of double tracking for the line.

Yeo noted the ERCL was set to become one of Malaysia’s most expensive infrastructure projects.

She said high costs would ultimately affect the commercial feasibility of the line, and may necessitate government aid in order to be viable.

“Therefore, we strongly believe that the Malaysian people deserve to know more details on the cost structure of the project. In the light of the risk of further ballooning of construction cost, we urge Putrajaya to disclose the detailed breakdown of cost of the project.”
