(Reuters) – Bruce Arena said on Friday he had resigned as manager of the U.S. men’s soccer team after failing to guide them to a spot in the 2018 World Cup finals.

Arena was hired last November with the tall order of getting the United States’ qualifying campaign back on track, but came up short this week after a humiliating 2-1 defeat at the hands of Trinidad & Tobago.
