Agriculture and Agro-based Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the use of collagen in durian also enabled the fruit to last up to a year.

“We have imports from Thailand but I cannot say specifically. However most of the world community, if given a choice between durian from Thailand and durian from Malaysia, those from Malaysia is preferred”, he said during the question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.

He was replying to a question from Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali (BN-Bagan Serai) concerning a study on durian intake and its effect on the health.

Shabery said various studies were conducted at the international level to identify the goodness of durian.

It includes a study in Thailand in 2011 on the composition of durian which has higher anti-oxidants compared to other tropical fruits besides a study in China in 2010 relating to durian skin that has antibiotics to relieve coughs. — Bernama
