GEORGE TOWN, Nov 16 — Police busted an international drug trafficking syndicate and detained three suspects before seizing methamphetamine worth RM2.06 million in separate raids in Penang last Tuesday.

Penang acting police chief Datuk Roslee Chik said following intelligence work and public tip-off, police raided three locations in Bayan Lepas and Air Itam from 3pm before arresting the suspects, aged between 35 and 45, comprising a Malaysian and two Indonesians.

“Police confiscated 24.7kg syabu and 8,400 ecstasy pills, all of which is valued at RM2.06 million from a car that belonged to one of the suspects in Bayan Lepas. Police also seized four luxury cars worth RM765,000 and RM19,960 cash.

“The success is attributed to the collaboration between Bukit Aman’s Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING), Penang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department and the Indonesian Narcotics Police,” he told a press conference here today.

Also present were Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department deputy director Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat and Police Attache of the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Chaidir Zahari.

Roslee said initial investigations revealed that the syndicate, which had been operating over the past two months, had brought in the drugs from a neighbouring country via the sea route and made Penang a transit point before sending the supply to Indonesia.

He also said the third suspect, a local man, had three criminal records for drugs, while the two Indonesians possessed valid travel documents.

“All the suspects are being remanded for seven days to facilitate investigations,” he said, adding that police were still closing in on other syndicate members.

Meanwhile, Roslee said police managed to cripple 29 drug trafficking syndicates in both countries from 2016 until October this year, thanks to the collaboration between the three parties.

“We have seized 610kg of syabu, 1,695kg (syabu liquid); 146kg (ecstasy powder); 15,800 (ecstasy pills) and 2.5 million (Eramin 5 pills) during the period,” he added. — Bernama
