Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the move was to improve on KEMAS early childhood education with the rise of social problems among students and youngsters.

“The government is committed to improving KEMAS kindergarten learning syllabus that is being coordinated with the national preschool curriculum as well as the national preschool assessment instruments developed by the Education Ministry to assess the development of children.

“Some people think there is not much quality in KEMAS kindergarten education as the fees charged are around RM10 to RM20, but the level of quality is not low,” he said when winding-up debate on the Supply Bill 2018 at the committee level for his ministry in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Ismail Sabri was replying to a question from Datuk Dr Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad (PAS-Pasir Puteh) who wanted to know on the progress and quality of KEMAS kindergarten education nationwide.

He said KEMAS kindergarten teachers have a least a diploma in Early Childhood Education and the learning centre was recognised by Readers Digest Asia as a Trusted Brand for Preschool for 2017 .

To date 8,694 of the 11,823 KEMAS teachers have obtained diploma, while those without diplomas were given special training under the ministry and it was targeted that all teachers should have a diploma by 2020.

To a question from of Shamsul Iskandar @ Yusre Bin Mohd Akin (PKR-Bukit Katil) whether the government would open Mara Digital to non-Bumiputeras, Ismail Sabri said the ministry has no plan to do so.

Currently, there are four Mara Digital outlets operating at Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) building (Jalan Raja Laut), Anggerik Mall (Shah Alam), Ipoh and Kuantan, achieving RM28.7 million in total sales. ― Bernama
