PADANG TERAP, Jan 12 — Pakatan Harapan is a coalition set up merely to serve the self-interest of the component parties to enable them to contest in the 14th general election (GE14).
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said this could be seen through the allocation of 165 seats among component parties in which Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) was allocated the most with 52 seats, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) with 51 seats, DAP (35) and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) was given 27 seats.
“Pakatan Harapan was set up among splinter politicians such as (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim who established PKR after leaving Umno, similarly Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad set up Bersatu (PPBM) while Mohamad Sabu founded Amanah after leaving PAS.
“These parties combined with the dominant party, DAP which is good in the chess game. That is why despite being allocated only 35 seats, they did not make any sound as they wanted to pit the Malays against one another,” he said.
He was speaking after presenting contributions at a Family Day programme in Kampung Baru Lembah Permai, Kuala Nerang here today.
He was commenting on Dr Mahathir’s announcement as the coalition’s chairman who was poised to contest in either Putrajaya, Langkawi or Kubang Pasu parliamentary seat in GE14.
Mahdzir who is also Education Minister said even before the week was over, news of the parliamentary seat allocation was met with great unhappiness by many coalition leaders and members.
“Less than a week after the announcement, PKR had voiced its dissatisfaction over seat allocation while some Pro 98 Reformist supporters of Anwar Ibrahim were dismayed that Dr Mahathir was nominated as Pakatan Harapan’s prime minister candidate.
“This shows that they may sleep on the same pillow but they have their own dreams which means all of them have their own hidden agenda. The coalition is merely a vehicle of convenience for GE14,” he said. — Bernama
