KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 ― Police clarified today that a man shown with burns on his body in a photo spread online only recently had been doused with petrol and not acid as previously claimed.
Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Shaharuddin Abdullah said investigators revisited the 42-year-old victim at the hospital around 11pm yesterday after finding inconsistencies between his account and injuries.
“The victim claimed he could not remember anything else during the second interview except that it took place near Jalan Tun Sambanthan and not Jalan Pekeliling as reported earlier.
“Investigators were brought to a new location and interviewed three witnesses who confirmed the incident took place around 10pm on Sunday,” he said.
According to Shaharuddin, one witness said the victim was fishing with others under a bridge before a suspect named Karim poured petrol from above and ignited the liquid with a lighter.
He said the motive of the incident was due to the suspect’s unhappiness with the victim over frequent drunken behaviour.
Police arrested three people for further investigation and obtained swabs of petrol for analysis after burn residue was discovered at the location of the scene yesterday.
Initial investigation showed the victim had gone to the bridge near the Pos Malaysia Headquarters to fish at Sungai Klang with his cousin and two friends around 8pm on Sunday.
An hour later, an unidentified liquid was poured from above and struck the victim who felt burns all over his body.
He then ran into into the river to save himself.
He managed to swim to safety and fell asleep by the river bank until the next morning, when he decided to return to the location of the incident.
