KOTA KINABALU, Feb 15 —  The Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) is fast reaching its maximum handling capacity of domestic and foreign passengers and is in need of an immediate solution, Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said.

He said the KKIA’s handling capacity was set at nine million passengers and last year, it had hit 7.9 million.

“The airport is expected to experience overcrowding and will reach its maximum handling capacity soon with the increase in tourist arrivals, especially from China.

“Thus, the state government has submitted several proposals at the federal level, with options to either expand the KKIA or build a new airport. This matter needs to be addressed immediately,” Masidi told reporters after attending the assembly of agencies under the ministry here today.

Also present were the ministry’s assistant ministers Datuk Kamarlin Ombi and Datuk Pang Yuk Ming; permanent secretary Datu Rosmadi Datu Sulai; Sabah Parks Board of Trustees chairman Datuk Sri Dr Tengku Zainal Adlin Tengku Mahamood and Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. — Bernama
