KUALA LUMPUR: Actors Ansel Elgort (The Fault In Our Stars) and Lily James (Cinderella) along with director Edgar Wright (Shaun Of The Dead) were down in Kuala Lumpur to promote their movie Baby Driver.

The movie revolves around Baby (Elgort), an innocent-looking getaway driver who works for a Kingpin named Doc (two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey) whom he owes money to.

Baby’s job is to drive hardened criminals from point A to point B, with daredevil flair while listening to specially selected music through the ear plugs of his iPod.

Baby needs the loud music to drown out the humming sound in his head due to an accident when he was a child.

He falls in love with a diner waitress called Deborah (James) but finds this relationship doomed due to the the nature of his work and the dangerous people he associates with.

The movie also stars Eiza Gonzalez, Jon Hamm and Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx .

During a press conference held at Ritz Carlton Kuala Lumpur, Elgort had durian for the first time and said he liked it.

“I had jack fruit as well. I loved it. I am really enjoying Malaysia,” said Elgort to cheers from the room that was made up of press from Thailand, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.

James and Wright who arrived in later flight had yet to see anything yet but are looking forward to enjoying their brief stay here.

James said that she was attracted to doing the film because she was a fan of the director. “When I got the script, it was this thing that shone out, that it was an Edgar Wright film. I have never worked with someone who has such a unique clear vision of exactly what he wants his story and film to be. It was so rewarding to work with him.”

“I agree,” said Elgort amidst laughter from the audience. “His style is so specific. As actor when working with a director with a specific style you will grow more as opposed to an director who tells you to do your own thing. So I grew a lot as an artist and I learned a lot from him,” said Elgort who expressed hope to work with Wright again.

As for the title Baby Driver, Wright said,”There is a song called Baby Driver by Simon & Garfunkel that is featured at the end of the movie. It was a song i loved when I was growing up. This song itself is about about this folklore about a driver called Baby Driver and I thought that it was kind of interesting. Also in a lot of gangster movies, you had gangsters called Babyface like Babyface Nelson. It was standard that the youngest gangster in the group would be called Babyface.”

As Baby was the youngest in the group, it was understood that he was the Baby Driver, Wright explained.

Wright actually had the idea for this movie way back in 1995 but only seriously started working on it three years ago. The movie itself features over 30 songs, all written into the script.

While movie boasts so many great car chases and great music but Elgort believes that what makes the movie special in the relationship between Baby and Deborah. “It adds so much to the movie and allows the movie to feel more grounded.”

The actors and director also graced the “pink carpet” at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur for the film’s premiere screening at the GSC cinema there.
