KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 ― The country’s challenge at the French Open Super Series Badminton Tournament fizzled out after the only pair left standing, Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing were beaten in the quarter-finals in Paris early today.
The eight seeded pair put up a brilliant fight against the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medallists Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia before bowing out in 21-19, 14-21 and 12-21 in the mixed doubles match which lasted 64 minutes, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website;www.bwfbadminton.com.
Tontowi/Liliyana, the fourth seeded pair, will square-off against the Chinese pair of Zhang Nan/Li Yunhui in the semfinals later today after the sixth seeded pair stunned ompatriots and second seeds Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong;winning in 21-19, 18-21 and 21-9.
Malaysia’s interest in four other events – men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, ended in the preliminary round after the players were defeated by their respective opponents. ― Bernama
