KOTA BARU, Nov 12 — Penang edged Kelantan 2-1 to lift the 77th edition of the Sultans’ Gold Cup after a 15-year wait, at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium, here last night.
Striker Muhd Sharulnizam Anuar was the toast of Penang when he struck the winner in the 112nd minute of extra time after both teams were tied 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation play.
Muhd Sharulnizam went on a solo run, beating three defenders on the way before burying the ball past goalkeeper Mohd Farmie Hussin.
Penang, winner of the cup in 2002, took the lead through Muhd Nazrul Najmi Mohd Noor in the 87th minute while Kelantan, winner of the cup in 2010 headed in the equaliser through Mohd Asraff Alifuddin in the last minute.
The win saw Penang take home RM45,000 while Kelantan received RM20,000 as the runner-up. — Bernama
