KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 — Malaysian squash queen, Datuk Nicol David had to dig deep into her reserves before advancing to the last eight in the Hong Kong Squash Championships held at the Hong Kong Squash Centre, today.
The fifth seeded player who is also the ten-time winner of the tournament, won the first game before losing in the next two sets against ninth seed Annie Au from the host country.
Nicol, then, stepped up her tempo in the last two sets to secure a 11-9, 9-11, 7-11,11-9 and 11-7 win in the second round match which lasted for about 55 minutes.
The victory saw Nicol extend her victory against Au to 25 wins against one defeat.
The Penangite who last won the tournament in 2015, however, will face an uphill task as he will take on third seed and world number three, Camille Serme of France.
Serme advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Joey Chan from Hong Kong 11-6, 7-11, 11-6 and 11-8 in another second round match.
Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s division, fizzled out, yesterday after the only player left standing, Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan who came from the qualifying match lost 7-11, 5-11 and 2-11 to eight seed, Fares Dessouky of Egypt in their opening round encounter. — Bernama
