MIRI, Nov 19 — The Sarawak government has proposed that longhouse and village chiefs in the state establish community fire-fighting teams in their respective areas.
Sarawak Local Government Ministry Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said the setting up of such teams was needed as a preventive measure for fire particularly in the rural areas, such as in Marudi in Miri division.
“It is also needed for longhouses and villages with many residents but away from the Fire and Rescue Department,” he said when launching the Marudi Community Firefighter at the George Ijus Jawa Longhouse in Kampung Kejaman, Baram today.
Penguang also said the George Ijus Jawa Longhouse was suitable to have its very own volunteer fire-fighting team as it has 76 doors with over 600 residents. — Bernama
