KUCHING, April 6 — Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg said today that the state Barisan Nasional’s (BN) list of candidates for GE14 has “more or less” been finalised.
He said he had already discussed the list with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The list will see new faces from the state BN component parties, including those from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
Abang Johari, who is also state BN chairman, did not deny it when asked whether Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian is the state BN’s choice for Stampin in GE14.
“Just wait for the announcement of Barisan’s list of candidates by the prime minister over the next few days,” he told reporters who asked him to confirm recent speculation that the local government and housing minister had been picked to wrest back Stampin from the Opposition DAP.
Speaking to reporters after the launch of Sehati Research Institute and Resources and Research Centre at SUPP headquarters here, Abang Johari said he wanted SUPP to win as many seats as possible, especially those won by the Opposition in the 2013 general election (GE13).
In GE13, SUPP only managed to win Serian, but lost six other seats to the Opposition.
Separately, Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawan state assemblyman, sidestepped questions when reporters asked him if he had been selected to stand in Stampin.
“I don’t know. I am not saying anything,” he said, when asked if he is contesting in Stampin, adding that his term as a senator only expires in May 2020.
Dr Sim predicted that state BN can win 29 out of the 31 parliamentary seats in Sarawak.
