GOLD COAST, April 8 — The national badminton squad will be clashing against India for the mixed team gold medal tomorrow after trouncing England 3-0 at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Earlier, India advanced into the final after thrashing Singapore 3-1 at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre today.
In the semi-final match, Malaysia collected the first point via men’s doubles, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong who easily disposed of Chris Langridge-Marcus Ellis 21-9 and 21-11, in a game lasting 32 minutes.
Women’s singles Soniia Cheah continued the winning streak by beating Chleo Birch 21-17, 15-21 and 21-18.
The winning point came from men’s singles, Datuk Lee Chong Wei, who ousted Rajiv Ouseph, 21-18 and 21-16.
When met after the match, Chong Wei said the team needed a good rest before meeting India.
“The match today was good to prepare for a much tougher opponent in the final tomorrow.
“We have to be more focused if we want to win the gold medal. We will be prepared to give our best,” he said.
On his opponent tomorrow, Chong Wei said both HS Prannoy and K.Srikanth are equally dangerous to him but he is ready to meet either one. — Bernama
