SAN FRANCISCO, April 10 ― Open-world action adventures Far Cry 5 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR do well, lodging high chart positions on Steam and elsewhere come Monday, April 9, 2018; Project Cars 2 benefits from a half-price sale, team hack-and-slash Vermintide II remains a fixture, and spooky short The Librarian makes an impression on Itch.
With the past week representing something of a lull in the release calendar, it’s late March’s Far Cry 5 that has the biggest footprint in Steam’s top five, courtesy of three available editions not yet consolidated under a single chart entry.
Going back even further in time, the expansive Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be seven years old this year, and its longevity on PC is extended once more by an official virtual reality edition, released April 3; meanwhile, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds maintains its top-spot status for the 54th week in a row.
Yet none of these were Steam’s best release of the week, according to hidden gems search service Steam250, which digs through player reviews to locate the best experience rather than the best revenue generator.
There, it’s diminutive indie game Minit, a delightful oddity in which players progress a minute at a time, that is Steam’s best new release; with user reviews leaning 96 per cent positive, the quirky adventure is small but perfectly formed according to its self-selecting playerbase — and a fair distance ahead of PUBG (44 per cent,) Far Cry 5 (72 per cent,) Skyrim VR (86 per cent,) Vermintide 2 (77 per cent) or anything else in Steam’s top ten sales ranking.
Elsewhere, we see a half-price sale on ambitious racer Project Cars 2 propel it up the Humble Store chart. The success of Far Cry 5 is duplicated across Humble and GamersGate, where Skyrim VR joins it.
Vermintide II digs in on GamersGate and Fanatical, sandwiched by two value-based collections.
And on Itch, it’s atmospheric short The Librarian that has best caught site visitors’ imagination.
Designed by one of the artists on 2017’s well-received Thimbleweed Park, it takes players on a fear-conquering investigation of the local library’s spooky secrets.
